CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

“Please, Lily,” I plead, gripping her hand across the table. “Violet needs us. She can't break the curse without us.”

Spider's face hardens, his one eye leveled at us. “Our place is with the people. We won’t abandon them now.”

I look between them helplessly. We've been through so much to reach this point, but it's clear their hearts remain here, with the revolution.

“What if we all go to Duskmore and break the curse, we could return with a new strategy to end this revolution—together.”

My words seem to give them pause and I can see them thinking it over. Trouble is, we still have no way of getting over the wall. Rose, Lily and I have our Hiraeth Stones, but the children don't and none of us are prepared to put them in any danger by attempting to go through Torgotha. We go over the abominable wall, or we don't go at all.

“Your magic is needed, Lady Bloom,” says Moth formally. “I was sent to take you to Duskmore in the hopes of breaking a curse that neither the king, nor queen know the origin of. Every day, the king's brother, Prince Wolf, falls into an unnatural sleep, and every night, the king does the same. We must act and return to Duskmore.”

Lily and Spider exchange a hesitant look, weighing the risks of leaving Embervale behind. I hold my breath, praying they'll see the wisdom in our plan.

Finally, Lily nods, her voice wavering. “All right, Poppy,” she agrees, tears glistening in her eyes. “For you—and for the chance at a better future, we'll go to Duskmore. But promise me one thing: when this is all over, we'll come back and finish what we started.”

“Of course,” I whisper, squeezing her hand tightly. “Perhaps then we can count on King Python's forces to help.”

She smiles at my words, and there's even a glint of hope in Spider's eye. “An army of Magix would certainly shift the balance,” he says.

Spider and Lily then begin the preparations to leave, advising their officials, packing belongings and dressing for the journey to Torgotha.

The stench of smoke and sweat fills the air, as my heart races within the confines of my chest. Moth's hand grips mine tightly, our fingers intertwined in a desperate bid for reassurance. The chaotic streets of Embervale stretch out before us like a battlefield, revolutionaries and Guards locked in a deadly dance of violence.

“Stay close,” Moth warns, his instruction meant for all of us as he tries to be heard over the cacophony of clashing swords and anguished cries.

“This way,” Spider whispers, his dark eye darting between the buildings that line the street. He is a shadow, a creature of stealth and cunning, and his love for Lily has only served to intensify his devotion to the cause. As we move, he leads us down a series of winding alleys and hidden passages, navigating the maze-like cityscape with ease.

“Are you certain this is the right way?” Moth asks, glancing towards Spider.

“Trust me,” he replies, his voice a low growl.
